If you drive a diesel vehicle, you’re probably familiar with DPFs, or diesel particulate filters. But when was the last time you had yours cleaned? As a diesel driver, this is something you should be doing on a regular basis.

This will help manage your vehicle’s environmental impact while maximising its fuel efficiency, which in turn keeps your running costs down. Your vehicle will also perform better, allowing you to get the maximum power from the diesel engine.

What does a DPF do?

DPFs filter out harmful soot from your diesel vehicle’s exhaust gas, which reduces the output of pollutants into the atmosphere. This reduces the negative health impacts of diesel emissions. For this reason, DPFs are now compulsory in all new diesel vehicles.

So, what happens to the sooty particulate matter? It gets trapped inside the filter. Over time, this will eventually block the filter and interfere with the engine and exhaust system. Knowing this, it’s easy to see why it’s important to clean the filter out regularly.

How often do DPFs need cleaning?

In general, it’s a good idea to schedule a clean every 6-12 months, depending on how much use your vehicle gets.

Some vehicles will have a DPF warning light on the dash, which makes it easy to know when you need a filter clean. There are also a few warning signs that your filter is blocked and due for a clean. Keep an eye out for issues such as:

  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Loss of power in the engine
  • Strange smells around the engine
  • Excessive or strong-smelling exhaust fumes

Any of these may indicate a blocked filter.

What’s the best way to clean a DPF?

DPF filter cleaning is best done by an experienced diesel mechanic. At Bosch Car Service Milperra, we use ultrasonic cleaning – a highly effective technique for clearing out clogged filters.

Our team has specialist skills in cleaning all components of diesel cars and trucks, using non-corrosive and non-abrasive methods. By preventing deposits from accumulating in the engine, a well-maintained diesel system helps keep your DPF cleaner. It also boosts your vehicle’s performance and efficiency.
